What draws so many people to Arizona during the winter? Once the holidays are over, we head straight into snowbird season, and every year the Valley takes on a whole new energy. Thousands of seasonal residents arrive, drawn by the sunshine and the lineup of long-standing winter events that make this time of year so special.
These events happen all across the Valley and have been bringing in visitors from out of state and around the world for decades. Here’s a look at the winter events we see bring the most excitement each year.
Barrett-Jackson car auction. We kick off the winter season with the car auction at WestWorld in North Scottsdale. This world-class event draws thousands of visitors who come to bid on collector cars, making it one of the most exciting weeks of the entire winter season.
Scottsdale Western Week. The week-long series of events takes place in Old Town Scottsdale and is highlighted by the Parada del Sol, a beloved parade that’s been part of the community since 1953 and runs through the heart of Old Town.
Waste Management Open and the Bird’s Nest. As we move into February, we see the Waste Management Open take over the Valley. It’s known for its high-energy atmosphere, along with the famous Bird’s Nest and nightly entertainment. This year’s headliners include Ludacris and Nelly, making it one of the most talked-about weeks of the winter.
Arabian Horse Show. The following week, we welcome the world-famous Arabian Horse Show. This year is especially notable as it marks the event’s 70th anniversary, adding even more significance to an already iconic winter tradition.
Arizona Art and Wine Festival and Fountain Hills Art Festival. That same week also brings the Arizona Art and Wine Festival in Chandler, followed by the Fountain Hills Art Festival. These events add a creative and community-focused element to the winter calendar and are always popular with both residents and visitors.
Cactus League baseball. From February 20 to March 24, half of MLB teams do their spring training in Arizona, generating a $700 million economic impact and $400 million in GDP through hotels, dining, rentals, and game attendance.
Arizona Renaissance Festival. This year marks its 30th anniversary, and the festival runs for nine consecutive weekends from late January through March. It’s a longtime favorite with families and visitors, and a fun way for us to close out the winter season.
